Galanthus nivalis 'Lydiard Diana' is a lovely, slender-looking snowdrop with flowers that are completely white. There are no green marks on the inner segments at all, and the inners are nearly as long as the outers, so the flowers have a pure, poculiform look that is very striking against the dark leaves.
I class it as a poculiform, and a very beautiful one at that. The outer segments are lightly ridged and bluntly pointed, and a group of these beautiful little white lanterns is a delight on a dull winter day. Here in the North West it usually flowers in late February.
'Lydiard Diana' comes from Lydiard Park, near Swindon, and takes its name from an 18th-century ancestor of Lady Diana Spencer, who became the 2nd Viscountess Bolingbroke. It is a great favourite of Brian Ellis, who bought his from Colin Mason.
