Galanthus 'Celia's Double' is a very neat and tidy double, with a very tight rosette.  When the outer segments spread out, which they do like little wings, what you'll find underneath is a very tidy, layered rosette of beautifully marked inner segments.  Each one is banded with green at the sinus in a slightly squashed, inverted 'U', and there's another very attractive marking at the base, which to me looks almost like two solid marks, one each side, joined by a smudge of green.  The inner segments also have a delicate, almost striped texture to them.

It's one of those flowers that you need to lift and look into to fully appreciate, and it's well worth the effort.  All in all, it's a very attractive snowdrop, and a very vigorous and robust plant, with a very erect scape.  Here in the North West it usually flowers in mid January.

It came up as a seedling in Celia Sawyer's garden in South Warwickshire.  Celia has told the story herself in the newsletter: a Greatorex double grows near her 'Diggory', and she reckons the two must have got together, as two very different seedlings appeared, one becoming 'Celia's Double' and the other 'Walter's Double'.  Freda Cox records that it was introduced and named for her by Richard Bashford and Valerie Bexley at Woodchippings in 2016.

Celia tells me that both 'Celia's Double' and 'Walter's Double' are much more robust than her namesake, G. 'Celia Sawyer', and both are doing well for her.

(I like to describe the plants I sell as best I can from my own experience of growing them.  For the history of each individual snowdrop, I use books, websites and information from friends and others in the snowdrop world, some of whom have given me insight into information about cultivars that isn't readily available elsewhere.  Where information has come from a third party, I always try to make sure the source is credited.  Please note that not everything written about snowdrops in books or on websites is completely accurate, so if you spot anything on my website that you believe is wrong, I'd be really grateful if you would get in touch and let me know.  The same goes for any information you may have about any of the snowdrops on my website: if you'd be willing to share it with me and happy for me to publish it here, I'd love to hear from you.  I'm always open to changing the information on my listings, and I'll always credit any new sources.  My ultimate aim is for this website to be a trusted reference for snowdrops, so it is vital to me that the information is accurate.)
