Galanthus 'Bloomer' is a cultivar which has been in circulation for around 35 years, being discovered initially by John Morley of North Green Snowdrops in Norfolk in 1990.
The monograph explains that it came up as a seedling in the clump of 'Tubby Merlin' at North Green, and in the early 1990s it was sent out by mistake as 'Tubby Merlin' itself, before it was given a name of its own.
Brian Ellis tells me that mature bulbs are generally double-scaped, and that North Green originally nicknamed it 'Frilly Knickers', after the frilly margins on its inner segments. 'Bloomer' was then felt to be a more suitable name, as it gave a nod to that, and also to the fact that it is such a good doer.
It is a beautiful plant with an olive green ovary and attractive inner marking, sometimes both looking even more yellow than green.
A good doer and one that has stood the test of time.
