Galanthus 'Bankside' is a lovely hybrid snowdrop, believed to have G. nivalis and G. plicatus as its parents (x valentinei). The first thing you'll notice is the ovary; it's long, quite large and a soft lemony-green, rather than the usual bright green. Beneath it hang pure white, cupped outer segments, and the inners are marked with a tidy green heart-shaped mark to the apex.
It sits on a longer-than-average pedicel, so the flower swings out away from the stem and moves about with every bit of wind, which is lovely to watch on a breezy winter's day. It's a good, easy doer that settles in quickly after planting and soon makes a clump. Here in the North West, it flowers from mid January to early February.
Freda Cox records it as an introduction of the late Alan Street, named after the former Bankside garden at Blewbury in Oxfordshire.
