Galanthus ‘Brenda Troyle’ - With all the new and wonderful variations of snowdrop available today, G. ‘Brenda Troyle’, as with a lot of the older cultivars, is very easily overlooked. A very attractive plant that is very vigorous indeed. It is a hybrid – it looks like x valentinei (G. nivalis x G. plicatus) to me, but I can’t find confirmation of that in any of the books or online. It is of Irish origin and has been in cultivation for well over 65 years; it was given the RHS Award of Garden Merit back in 1960. Nobody seems quite sure where the name comes from. Some say it’s a character from Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Pirate, others a member of staff at an Irish nursery. I find it has a very good scent and flowers for a long period between early to mid-January, right into February. A lovely garden plant that will form a great clump in relatively good time.
