starling
Galanthus 'Starling'

Galanthus ‘Starling’ - An unusual hybrid double/semi-double snowdrop, originally found and named by the late Alan Street at Avon Bulbs in Somerset. It’s assumed to be an elwesii cross – the foliage certainly looks similar to that of G. elwesii. I personally feel like this snowdrop sits somewhere in between a spiky snowdrop and a double in its form. An attractive plant and one that I am very fond of. Flowering here around mid to late January, the flowers are long lasting and should put on a good display throughout most of February too. All of the photos above were taken at the same time in 2023, of different flowers within the same clump. I believe the lack of uniformity in the flower form in the photos is maybe due to the younger age of some of the bulbs. Green tips are, however, consistent within the clump. Another interesting quality is that the flowers are held horizontally and sometimes even vertically, allowing you to easily see the generous splashes of green on the inner segments without bending or kneeling. I always thought this plant was named for the bird but have recently learnt that it was, in fact, named due to its ‘star-like’ form. It is a good doer and looks great in a clump – a lovely garden plant.
