Almost the whole of each outer segment is washed and streaked with a soft, cool green, right down from the tip, and the inner segments are green nearly all over, with only a thin rim of white left at the edge. It is a fairly small, neat plant, and its leaves are broad and grey-green.

It has a wonderful story. The monograph tells how it was found by Rosemary Burnham in the remains of an old garden at Burnaby in British Columbia, Canada, in the early 1960s.

Freda Cox adds that Rosemary's own plants were lost, but by then she had given bulbs to friends, and Don Armstrong replaced them; those were stolen, and another friend replaced them again. The first bulbs to reach Britain died out too, but it made a quiet reappearance at the RHS show in February 1998, at the edge of Louise Vockins' display from Foxgrove Plants.

It was Don Armstrong, a great Canadian plantsman, who introduced it, and Brian Ellis tells me that in 1995 Don gave Pam Frost a collection of snowdrops that included 'Rosemary Burnham', along with the snowdrop that later became G. elwesii 'Don Armstrong'. Both books give 'Francesca' as another name for it, and Freda Cox records that it gained an RHS Preliminary Commendation in 2006. It can be slow to bulk up, so it is one to treasure. Here in the UK it usually flowers around mid to late January.

Sources
Some of the background here comes from Bishop, Davis & Grimshaw, Snowdrops: A Monograph of Cultivated Galanthus; Freda Cox, A Gardener's Guide to Snowdrops; and Brian Ellis (by email, October 2026).
