Flowering here around mid to late January, the flowers are long lasting and should put on a good display throughout most of February too. All of the photos above were taken at the same time in 2023, of different flowers within the same clump. I believe the lack of uniformity in the flower form in the photos is maybe due to the younger age of some of the bulbs. Green tips are, however, consistent within the clump. Another interesting quality is that the flowers are held horizontally and sometimes even vertically, allowing you to easily see the generous splashes of green on the inner segments without bending or kneeling. I always thought this plant was named for the bird but have recently learnt that it was, in fact, named due to its ‘star-like’ form. It is a good doer and looks great in a clump – a lovely garden plant.

Galanthus ‘Rodmarton’ - An attractive hybrid double snowdrop. For me, this plant has shown green-tipped outers consistently for the last few years but, apparently, they are something that can come and go. The photos above are from numerous different years (at least three). The inner segments are tightly and neatly packed and have a lovely bold inverted ‘U’ shaped marking to the apex. This plant is very vigorous and does brilliantly in the garden here.

Galanthus ‘Grüner Nebel’ - A lovely small plant, either pure nivalis or a nivalis hybrid. Discovered by and named by the late Alan Street in the woods at Avon Bulbs in 2011, ‘Midas’ is very vigorous and very beautiful. Like ‘Trym’, it’s an inverse poculiform (or pterugiform), and what makes it really special is that the yellow markings appear on the outers as well as the inners. There’s a lovely story that, a few days after it was found, Avon hosted a lunch for the ‘Immortals’ (people who have had snowdrops named after them) and ‘Midas’ was hidden under a pot so none of those sharp-eyed visitors would spot it! It was finally released by Avon in 2017. Quite similar in appearance to ‘Bitter Lemons’ (which was found close by some years later), although both plants flower at different times – ‘Bitter Lemons’ flowers mid to late January here and ‘Midas’ around mid-February. For this reason, if I’m completely honest, and I had to choose one of the two, it would be a close call, but my choice would be ‘Bitter Lemons’. That being said, I’m certainly not looking to undersell ‘Midas’ – without question, I wouldn’t, under any circumstances, want to be without it in my collection - it’s just a wonderful plant and really should grow in everyone’s garden.
